One of Israel's most famous soccer clubs has renamed itself Beitar "Trump" Jerusalem in honour of US President Donald Trump's "courageous" decision to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The demonstrations and general strikes had been planned to protest against the United States embassy's relocation from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which many consider contravenes worldwide consensus to not recognize the city as Israel's capital until its status is established during negotiations.
Hundreds of officials attended the ceremony, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump's daughter Ivanka, his senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin.
"But Jerusalem was Palestinian and Arab it will stay [that way] even after Trump will leave", he vowed.
Despite the bloodshed, Trump hailed the move in a video message.
He also said the US "remains fully committed to facilitating a lasting peace" between Israel and Palestine.
"Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital, yet for many years, we failed to acknowledge the obvious, the plain reality that Israel's capital is Jerusalem", Trump said in the pre-recorded remarks. "May there be peace".
The worldwide community does not recognize the annexation and believes the status of Jerusalem should be agreed with the Palestinians, who claim its eastern part as the capital of their future state.More news: Fox, NBC decide less is more to start the fall season
