Opposition parties trained their guns on state election commissioner (SEC) AK Singh with the CPI (M) and the Congress accusing him of conniving with the Trinamool Congress following widespread violence on Monday in the West Bengal panchayat polls.
"Most of the state election commission officials and the observers they have appointed remain inaccessible". Debu Das and his wife Usha succumbed to death the same morning, following which their party filed a complaint with the SEC, stating that TMC's hand was behind the crime. "We are awaiting written confirmation from authorities on the death toll", State Election Commission Secretary Nilanjan Shandilya told IANS.
In North 24 Parganas, the BJP accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of letting loose a reign of terror in several parts of the district, especially in Amdanga area. Two more CPM supporters were shot dead in Nandigram, East Midnapore district on Monday, the party said, slamming the election in a statement as "cold blooded murder of democracy". In North 24 Parganas some men tried to even capture a whole polling booth and clashes erupted when locals stopped them from doing so. Sanjit Pramanik, a young boy, was beaten to death by supporters of opposition parties in Nadia district, the party claimed. However, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee did not campaign, She appealed to the people of Bengal to vote in support of her government's development works. The West Bengal Director General of Police has said that 12 people died on polling day, six of these due to political clashes and six due to other reasons.

In Dinhata area of the district, at least 15 people, including voters, were injured after clashes broke out between two groups outside a polling station, police said. CPI-M leaders, including state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra, Left Front chairman Biman Bose joined a protest procession against the killing of people over panchayat poll from Moulali. Chakraborty has been admitted to a hospital, he said.
Apart from this, 20 persons were injured in a bomb blast outside a polling booth in Suktabari in North Bengal's Cooch Behar district. "BJP agent was trying to run away with the ballot box, while officers caught hold of him but people said to let him go".
Union Minister Babul Supriyo today demanded imposition of President's rule in West Bengal after violence ripped through the state during the Panchayat elections.
