Police have launched an investigation after video posted online shows an officer punching a woman on a beach in southern New Jersey. The violent encounter between the beachgoer, Emily Weinman, and two cops whose names have not been released was previously seen in a viral cell phone video capturing part of the incident. "You're choking me", Weinman screams in the third video, as the officer appears to be holding her down.
When asked by a reporter if Weinman deserved to be punched, Troiano said she was "out of control". Two cops approach me on a their four wheelers and ask me and my friend how old we are, we gave them our ages. "I tripped and fell and the cop tackled me to the ground and smashed my head into the sand", she wrote. She refused to give it to them. "I didn't do anything wrong!" As Weinman made a phone call, the officer turned off the body cam and the alcohol gets poured out. The officer flipped the camera back on mid-discussion, presumably after he explained he would allow Weinman to leave.
"Don't f--ing touch me", Weinman says. It ends before police have clearly detained Weinman.
"She tried walking away from me", the officer says.
"You're about to get dropped", the officer responds.More news: Hysteria Aside, Losing Track of Immigrant Kids Nothing New
The video does not clearly support his or Weinman's version of events. "One must also question whether proper discretion was used in what should have simply been issuing her a summons for underage possession of alcohol and whether the officers' actions escalated the situation", Stahl continues. The officer can be seen striking Weinman in the head, and she is handcuffed and walked to a police auto. Police say releasing the video was imperative for transparency and wasn't done sooner because juveniles and bystanders had to be redacted. "Look I don't care who you are and what you are, the worst people [to try to subdue] are women". Weinman can be heard yelling.
She says: "I'm not resisting". Wildwood police said on their Facebook page that 20-year-old Emily Weinman of Philadelphia faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
The officers involved were put on "administrative duty".
Wildwood mayor Ernie Troiano Jr.
Troiano told Philly.com that Weinman "chose to attack the officer, spit on the officer". She places her hands up, but it could be a defense reaction to an officer quickly closing in, he said. Did she deserve to get hit?
