On top of all that (!), Warner Bros. are also developing another Joker movie that will stand apart from the DCEU (or whatever they eventually end up calling it). Warner Bros. already announced that Margot Robbie's version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a "Birds of Prey" feature, and the next goal was setting up a film for Leto's Joker. This time, the honor of starring in the project belongs to Jared Leto, who first debuted his take on the iconic villain in 2016's Suicide Squad. In addition to the impending Suicide Squad 2 with director Gavin O'Connor, a "Mad Love" style movie with Harley and Joker is also in development.
It remains unknown whether the movie will be released before or after the Suicide Squad sequel, or whether it will tie in with the plot of the movie in any way whatsoever.
The second film reportedly has Joaquin Phoenix attached to star and will fall under an Origins banner.More news: Wynne's concession 'difficult' but 'honourable,' local Liberal candidates say
The joke's on, Jared Leto.
Despite earning bad reviews, "Suicide Squad" (2016) made Warner Bros. nearly $747 million at the worldwide box office.
Leto and the studio are now looking for a writer for the project, but there's no start date in place. Many of these performances, like those by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, are the stuff of acting legend, but then you get Jared Leto's odd take on the character which can perhaps only be described as divisive.
