USA retailer Walmart Inc (WMT.N) faced an outcry from supporters of President Donald Trump on Tuesday for listing for sale on its open marketplace clothing with the slogan "Impeach 45", an apparent reference to Trump, the country's 45th president.
"These items were sold by third party sellers on our open marketplace, and were not offered directly by Walmart", a spokesperson told the BBC on Tuesday.
"As a fierce proponent of the First Amendment that is politically nonpartisan, we recognize Walmart's right to sell the T-Shirts, and the right of consumers to purchase and wear them", the group's executive director Dan Shelley wrote in his letter to the retailer.
It's worth noting that Walmart also sells pro-President Donald Trump apparel, too, including the president's signature red "Make America Great Again" hat.More news: Russian Federation beat Spain on penalties to reach World Cup quarters
The line of apparel also sells on Amazon.com and through Old Glory's own website. Walmart hasn't responded to media inquiries seeking a response to the boycott threats. It appears that Walmart has now taken down the listing for the shirt, caving in to the pressure.
The shirt wasn't made by Walmart.
Facing protests, the company quickly pulled the shirt from its site, saying in a statement "As soon as we were alerted to this content promoting violence against journalists we removed the content, added this content to our automated scanning systems, and kicked off a human sweep of the site to find and remove any similar content".
