Outrage at the case grew on Sunday when a state politician, PC George, asked a press conference why the nun had taken more than two years to raise the complaint.
"They are arranging people to attack us and Bishop Franco is using his political power and money to get higher authorities of the investigation and the government to bury legal proceedings that I have filed against him", she charged.
A special team probing the case has said that according to preliminary investigation, Bishop Franco abused his position and repeatedly raped the nun. The protest has been called by the Joint Christian Council.
On Saturday, a group of nuns staged a sit-in protest at the High Court Junction bus station in Kochi demanding the arrest of the Jalandhar bishop, who is accused of sexually assaulting a nun in Kottayam. They took her statement too and there were contradictions. "But in the light of my experience I am beginning to think that the Church is a stepmother to women and laity". Following her complaint, the bishop was booked under Section 376 of Indian Penal Code.
In a statement, the Missionaries of Jesus congregation questioned the character of the nun and alleged she had illicit relationship with one of her relatives. She has been denied justice by the Church, government and the police.
Calling the nun "the real troublemaker", George demanded that the bishop be jailed if the allegations were proven right.More news: Florence becomes a hurricane, takes aim at US Southeast
Copies of the letter were sent to 21 others, including Cardinal Oswald Gracias and Delhi Metropolitan Archbishop, Anil Couto. "The police had recorded her statements several times, but the accused Bishop was interrogated only once", the nun said.
"If I am found guilty, which I am not, I am likely to be punished.I will appear before police if I am summoned".
Kottayam district police chief Hari Shankar has reportedly approached the director general of police Loknath Behera requesting that the high-profile case be handed over to the crime branch, though the latter said no such decision has been taken yet.
Terming the allegations against him as "serious", the bishop said only three persons knew the truth.
"There are some elements in Kerala who have been misusing nuns to achieve their hidden agenda", he said. I suffered it silently.
