A second case was opened in Virginia earlier this year on related charges that ended with a jury finding Manafort guilty on eight counts out of an 18-count indictment, facing a maximum of 80 years behind the bars, though under sentencing guidelines the term is likely to be closer to seven years.
The plea deal precludes the need for the second trial, sparing Manafort the steep legal fees of a second round of prosecution.
The details of the plea deal ― including whether it indicates that Manafort has to cooperate with Mueller's team ― are not yet available.
According to the court filing, the charge of conspiracy against the United States includes money laundering, tax fraud, failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, and acting as an unregistered lobbyist for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine.
People familiar with the plea discussions have previously said that Manafort has no intention of cooperating with Mueller, so it's possible any prospective agreement could allow him to admit guilt without providing information to investigators. The superseding information says that Manafort, with assistance from associate Konstantin Kilimnik, tried to influence two individuals "to induce them to say falsely that they did not work in the United States as part of the lobbying campaign, even though MANAFORT then and there well knew that they did lobby within the United States".More news: Trump, without evidence, rejects Puerto Rico hurricane death toll
Manafort served as Trump's campaign chairman until August 2016, when he was forced to resign from the post as reports emerged about his lobbying work for Russian-backed oligarchs in Ukraine. Manafort's attorneys had argued that the trial should be moved to Roanoke, Virginia, because the intensity of publicity in Washington made it impossible for him to receive a fair trial. Manafort, 69, was convicted last month of bank and tax fraud after a trial in Alexandria, Virginia.
Manafort was one of three key Trump associates who participated in the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer, which was set up after Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. The jury was deadlocked on the remaining 10 counts, which ended in mistrial.
The move toward a guilty plea is another reversal for Manafort, who has fought vociferously - but unsuccessfully - against Mueller's probe.
Prosecutor Andrew Weissman said in court Friday that Manafort had struck a "cooperation agreement".
If Manafort decides to cooperate with Mueller's probe, that would deal a setback to Trump ahead of congressional elections on November 6.
