Grassley commenced by noting the Democrats wanted Grassley to eschew reopening the hearing on the nomination on Monday, as Kavanaugh's accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, had made serious allegations against the judge.
U.S. President Donald Trump answers a question about the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court and allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh during a joint news conference with Poland's President Andrzej Duda in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., September 18, 2018.
In an interview with The Associated Press, he said the allegation against Kavanaugh, if true, is "close to being disqualifying, if not disqualifying". "It would be the perception they are mistreating this woman, who might be a victim, unfairly", he said.
"I really want to see her", Trump said.
Lisa Banks, a Ford lawyer, wrote that Mr Grassley's plan to call just two witnesses, Mr Kavanaugh and Ms Ford, "is not a fair or good faith investigation" and said "multiple witnesses" she did not name should be included. They also want more witnesses besides Kavanaugh and Ford, hoping to avoid what they said would turn into a "he-said-she-said" moment. The committee should proceed as scheduled with next Monday's hearing.
Prof Ford has been given until Friday to decide if she will testify.
Professor Blasey Ford says Mr Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed and tried taking off her clothes during the high school party. "At the same time, however, her worst fears have materialized".
Ford has said she is open to testifying before the committee-but not until the FBI conducts an investigation of her claim, which she first sent to Sen.
But as of Tuesday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans had yet to hear from Ford or her lawyer regarding their request for her to testify.
Trump, star of that infamous "grab 'em by the p**sy" Access Hollywood tape, assured reporters today he finds it "very hard for me to imagine that anything happened" between Kavanaugh and Ford, as she has claimed. "Every shred of evidence points to the fact that Dr. Ford, who has everything to lose and nothing to gain from this vicious process, is telling the truth, and that Brett Kavanaugh has lied over and over again". It's possible that women don't vote based on things like "optics" any more than men do, but it will absolutely excite the pink hat brigades and likely bring more of them to the polls.
