A crew member of Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, which provided the rescue helicopter that transported the bite victim, described the man's injuries as "absolutely horrific".
Although shark attacks are extremely rare, Australia has suffered the second-highest number of confirmed unprovoked attacks in the world since 1580, with 621 attacks, as of August 2018.
"Every solid effort was made to save that man's life", O'Connell said.
Western Health director of surgery and head of urology, Helen O'Connell, said the 33-year-old doctor had "unstoppable optimism".
"It is obviously a controversial thing, I know nothing about it personally, it is not my area of expertise so it would be foolish to make any comment", Prof O'Connell said.
Cid Harbour, located in north Queensland's idealic tourism hotspot the Whitsunday Islands, has recently become notorious for shark attacks following the mauling of two people in September this year.

"Definitely one of the more hard ones for everyone involved", McCauley said.
In September, two women were mauled in the same waters in a 24-hour period.
"If you look at white pointer shark attacks they happen between 10am and 2pm and if tiger shark are also in the middle of the day".
"We have just had a fatal shark attack in the Whitsundays and today we have learned a dispute with the Palaszczuk government means there will be a ban on boat patrols for two weeks", she said.
Barwick said in a statement that she was "devastated for the family and friends of this young man ... this is a awful tragedy".

Queensland Fisheries have deployed drum line shark baits in Cid Harbor in response to the shark attacks, according to reports.
They anchored 14 miles from Airlie Beach in Cid Harbour, intending to spend their first night in the popular, protected anchorage on Whitsunday Island, the uninhabited largest island in the group.
