The National Weather Service warned residents to take care as the winter storm continues to batter states throughout Monday.
Winter Storm Bruce brought snow and heavy winds to the Midwest and Great Lakes before heading into northern New England early in the week.
Fort Hays State University student Brooks Barber captured the blizzard conditions in Hays, Kansas, on Sunday morning. "We strongly recommend you postpone travel plans due to the conditions if possible".
In Kansas, Gov. Jeff Colyer issued a state of emergency declaration on Sunday.
A Blizzard Warning remained in effect early Monday from northeast Missouri into southeast Wisconsin and northeast IL, including the Chicago area.
The Chicago Department of Aviation says average departure delays at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport are 77 minutes and the flight-tracking website FlightAware reports that just over 350 flights headed to or from the USA were canceled as of early Monday. That included about 900 flights to and from Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway Airport and nearly 200 flights at Kansas City International Airport. Streets were dark, and many were without power, he said.
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport alone has had at least 900 cancellations so far and delays averaging more than 40 minutes.
The National Weather Service's Topeka office posted a video of near-blizzard conditions. Sustained winds of between 30 and 45 miles per hour are anticipated in some areas, with the possibility of 65 miles per hour gusts.
Reporting from Oak Park, Illinois, Reynolds reports that 2 inches of snow were falling an hour and the total accumulation could be more than a foot by the end of the day. Dozens of schools in MI are also closed in the Owosso Public Schools, Durand Area Schools, Waterbrook Christian Academy in Genesee Township, New Lothrop Public Schools, and North Huron Schools in Huron County areas, reports M-Live.
The winter storm is expected to continue east on Tuesday.
