That plan has repeatedly been rejected in principle by the White House, but Democrats, about to take control of the House when the new Congress convenes Thursday, say they'll try to force action on it. However, the new bill will include only $1.3 billion in funding for border security - a figure much lower than the $5 billion Trump has demanded.
The plan is to pass two bills - one reopening eight of nine closed agencies through September 2019, and another to fund the Department of Homeland Security through February 8 with $1.3 billion for border security.
A Schumer spokesperson said Thursday that the White House and Democrats were "still very far apart", but the spokesperson said Schumer made it clear at the time of last Satuday's meeting Democrats would not accept the offer.
The president has dug in on his demand for cash to fulfill his campaign promise, a wall across the U.S. -Mexico border.
