Many national parks remain open but with skeleton staffs.
Campers at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California's deserts were reporting squabbles as different families laid claims to sites, with no rangers on hand to adjudicate, according to local gift shop owner Ethan Feltges.
Kristen Brengel, vice president of government affairs for the National Parks Conservation Association, told CNN that the absence of supervision seems to have created a sense of "lawlessness" among the parks' visitors. Previous administrations have closed the parks during shutdowns, The Associated Press reported. If there is any sign of brands taking stands in the name of supporting our national parks during a time of duress, now would be the time to act as this shutdown shows no sign of ending anytime soon.
Joshua Tree National Park, which is located in California, will stay open during the shutdown.

Travelers can still get into the park, though officials have announced they will be limiting access along the Highway 41 corridor during peak visitation hours.
"It's impacted (our lives) for fun, but it's impacted people's livelihoods and people's jobs, and it's disappointing because, you know, is a wall really that important?" visiting Texan Lori Neblett said, referring to President Donald Trump's unwillingness to back off a demand for $5 billion for his long-promised border wall. A checkpoint is set up between 9am-6pm and people will only be allowed to pass through if they have a reservation for lodging or camping in the park.
"There is more trash and human waste and disregard for the rules than I've seen in my four years living here", Snider said.
"We can't afford to wipe all the bottoms who visit Joshua Tree", said Sabra Purdy, reported The Sun.
They had unleashed their dogs and let then run freely in an area rich with bears and other wildlife, and were scattering bags of garbage along the roads, Mr Snider said.
In Yellowstone National Park, private companies have picked up some of the maintenance normally done by federal workers.
Rattlesnake Canyon will close to reduce the number of potential search-and-rescue events for rangers already spread thin because of the shutdown, the park service said. "Once conditions go downhill, they will be hard to restore", writes Purdy. "But it's something we can handle".
