Dressed in a grey suit and tie, Spacey did not speak during a brief hearing at Nantucket District Court on Monday to face one count of felony indecent assault and battery, though a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf by the court.
The House of Cards actor had asked that his lawyers represent him at the hearing, but Judge Thomas Barrett declined, forcing Mr Spacey to appear before him at around 4pm Irish time.
He is back in court on March 4.
The judge additionally ordered Spacey to have no contact with the man accusing him of assault, and requested that six months of the accuser's phone data be preserved, The Associated Press reports. The former House of Cards star, who has been recently staying at an apartment in Baltimore, was joined by his attorney, Alan Jackson, who was in the passenger's seat.
It's the first criminal case brought against Spacey since other allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against him in 2017.
"By reporting the sexual assault, my client is determined an encouraging voice for those victims not yet ready to report being sexually assaulted", the alleged victim's attorney told E!

Spacey's lawyers have tried to poke holes in the case, noting that the teenager didn't immediately report the allegations and that authorities have no witnesses to the actual groping. At the same time, his lawyers requested that he be able to skip the first day in court to avoid heightening "the negative publicity already generated in connection with the case".
Spacey has also faced other allegations.
Authorities say Spacey got an 18-year-old bus boy drunk, and fondled the teen under his trousers without consent, while visiting The Club Car in Nantucket, Massachusetts in July 2016.
Unruh said Spacey, who denied the allegations offered her son several drinks, even though he was underage.
The victim said he videotaped Spacey groping him.
"Spacey stuck his hand inside my son's trousers and grabbed his genitals", Unruh said.
Spacey had been silent since his apology until late December, when he posted a video to his Twitter account speaking directly to the camera in the persona of his "House of Cards" character Frank Underwood.
