According to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department, Smollett was beaten by two men who approached him by yelling out "racial and homophobic slurs" at approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 300 block of E. North Water Street.
Howard states that the cast learned about what happened on set, saying that their jaws dropped when they heard the news.
On Thursday, the Smollett family condemned the "violent and unprovoked attack", calling it "a racial and homophobic hate crime" in their first official statement since the incident. "They have to be forgiven because it was done out of ignorance". The men wore ski masks and according to Smollett said, "Aren't you that f-t "Empire" N-word?" and yelled "This is MAGA country" and began beating him while continuing their vile tirade. Cops also found on another camera that looked like Smollett was "wearing a rope like a neck tie".
"Our family thanks everyone for their prayers and the huge amount of love he has received". "They are in the area that we have determined it could have taken place ... in the time and the area".
Guglielmi told The Associated Press that detectives have looked at hundreds of hours of surveillance video from businesses and hotels in the heavily monitored area and are expanding the search to include footage from public buses and buildings beyond the scene's immediate vicinity in the hopes of spotting the individuals who match Smollett's description. "We are so grateful that God saw him through this cowardly attack alive", the statement continued. "We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our Empire family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night", a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment told CNN. "We, as a family, will continue to work for love, equity and justice until it reigns supreme in our nation and world".
"The Streeterville neighborhood where the alleged attack occurred has a very high density of city and private surveillance cameras", Guglielmi said on Wednesday.
"That I can tell you is awful", Trump told reporters.
The FBI is investigating that alleged letter, Guglielmi told PEOPLE. Asked about the attack in the Oval Office following claims that the assailants shouted "this is MAGA country", Trump called the attacked "horrible".
