"We are extremely excited to welcome Markelle (Fultz) to the Magic family", said Weltman.
The Magic sent forward Jonathon Simmons, a protected 2020 first-round pick (via Oklahoma City) and a 2019 second-round pick to the Sixers. Fultz, an excellent shooter coming out of Washington (47.6 FG% / 41.3 3P% / 64.9 FT%) and one of the main reasons the Sixers moved up to get him, quickly became unable to shoot after his first summer as an National Basketball Association player. Fultz lost his starting spot in the rotation when the Sixers traded for Jimmy Butler. The future beyond this season is uncertain for the Sixers.More news: Russia Suspends Nuclear Arms Treaty After US Says to Pull Out
It became increasingly clear that Fultz was not a part of those plans. His present isn't especially clear either.
Fultz is a 6-foot-4 guard has played just 19 games for the Sixers this season after suffering a mysterious shoulder injury. It's an ideal situation for the former Sixers point guard to go to. Sometimes, the best thing is to admit you flubbed the pick (which, in Philly's defense, was more or less a consensus choice at the time) and move on. Both present much more immediate value than Fultz - his current value, sitting on the bench in street clothes, is zero.
The day prior, the Sixers and Boston Celtics had all but officially come to an agreement on a trade that would give the Sixers the top overall pick in the draft. To have any chance of doing that, Fultz needed to go somewhere he could actually play through his mistakes, and with the Sixers' timeline having accelerated massively in the past six months, the Magic are a flawless low-pressure environment for him to do that. And by adding Simmons, he made a team that now has legitimate championship aspirations better.
