The German designer, who has died at the age of 85, is being mourned by the fashion world as a "creative genius" who changed the face of Chanel.
In announcing Lagerfeld's death, Chanel said Virginie Viard, his second-in-command for three decades, will take over creative work for the collections "so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on".
Lagerfeld was also the creative force behind the furs and ready-to-wear at Fendi for more than half a century, as well as his signature fashion house which encompassed everything from designer RTW to jeans and fragrance over the years.
In 2013, Lagerfeld told the French magazine "Paris Match" he was born in 1935, but in 2019 his assistant still didn't know the truth, telling The Associated Press he liked "to scramble the tracks on his year of birth - that's part of the character".
Lagerfeld's death comes just weeks after he was notably absent from Chanel's couture shows in Paris on January 22.
"Fashion and culture have lost a major inspiration". Karl was the Creative Director of Chanel since 1983.
They have gone from strength to strength since the couple rekindled their romance in spring past year, following his split from Selena Gomez.
"Karl Lagerfeld is an huge personality, someone out of the ordinary", French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told RTL radio.

Lagerfeld joined Chanel in 1983 as artistic director and had been there ever since, reports the Guardian.
Born Karl Lagerfeldt on September 10, 1933, in Hamburg, he later dropped the final letter in his surname to make his fashion brand more marketable. While Lagerfeld famously said that he was "trying to make sure that [he] won't be remembered", it may be the one thing in his long, bright-burning life that he completely failed at.
Viard told Elle, "I like to think of myself as the one who helps his vision come alive", as she would bring each hand-drawn sketch made by Lagerfeld to the première d'atelier and prepare everything for the very private creative director.
Collegues in the fashion industry espressed their sorrow on social media.
Lagerfeld - dubbed "Kaiser Karl" and "Fashion Meister" among a whole host of media monikers - was born in Hamburg to a German mother and a Swedish father who imported condensed milk.
The pampered eight-year-old puss has enjoyed a jetset lifestyle eating off silver platters since Lagerfeld "kidnapped" her in 2011 from his young friend, male model Baptiste Giabiconi.
Lagerfeld worked tirelessly, simultaneously churning out collections for LVMH's Fendi and his own label, up until his death.
"Sending my love to the Lagerfeld family and to all closest to him".
