As for Machado, the San Diego Padres have apparently stepped up with a big offer after GM A.J. Preller visited Harper in Miami last week.
"I'm hearing they're pretty well down the process, here", Bowden said.
There is momentum that the Phillies could potentially strike a deal with the top free agent.
"I think it's intensifying now, and, all the teams that we've heard, I think, our the main teams: the Padres, the Giants and the White Sox are the other teams for Harper". I think Harper is ready to go.More news: Princes William and Harry to part ways
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com threw some cold water on any notion that a deal was close, reporting Monday morning that no deal is imminent. It's said to be an eight-year contract worth at least $240 million. The drama surrounding which team Machado will sign with has been exhausting for many but soon he will have to make a decision.
But, I kept being told over and over again Bryce Harper wants to go to a place where he can win a world championship. When you look at the teams the odds markers are looking at, the Giants are years away.
10 years, $300 million is of course the terms of the deal the Nationals reportedly offered Harper months ago as the offseason was getting underway, so if he's been holding out for a better contract then the Phillies may be forced to top it.
If Harper signs with the Phillies, he would step right into right field and the middle of what's shaping up to be a very potent lineup.
