This is a fundamental turning point.
In a speech at a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday, Erdogan said the legitimization of the occupation of the Golan Heights can not be allowed. "Changing the status of the Golan Heights bypassing the Security Council is a direct violation of United Nations decisions", the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman stated. This diminished the political value of American recognition for Israel and ensured that few other countries, including Canada, would follow America's lead, further isolating and weakening American leadership.
Trump had already fulfilled two major items on Netanyahu's wish list, recognising contested Jerusalem as Israel's capital in 2017 and moving the American embassy to the holy city from Tel Aviv last May.
To justify their likely forthcoming decision to consider the Golan Heights lawfully part of Israel, current and former U.S. officials have cited, among other things, the Syrian government's systematic human rights abuses against its own population, some of which amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, and Iranian influence in Syria.
According to the UN Charter Israel's seizure of the Golan violates the principle that acquisition of territory by force is illegal while the colonisation of occupied territory is branded illegal by the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Trump's aides have indicated privately that they believe his moves on Jerusalem have provoked a less severe reaction in the Arab world than experts had predicted, a person familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity.More news: Samsung to Unveil Mid-Priced Phone in Bangkok Next Month
Former US negotiators and envoys told The National they were puzzled by the Mr Trump's decision and feared it could backfire.
"Anti-Semitism has no place in the Congress of the United States, and any member who slanders those who support the historic alliance between the United States and Israel with such rhetoric should not have a seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee", Pence said.
But after the moves on Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, Iran and Hezbollah may feel better able to present themselves as the only steadfast allies of the Palestinian cause.
The U.K. also voiced concern on the decision, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office announcing: "The U.K. views the Golan Heights as territory occupied by Israel".
Israel's army earlier said a rocket was sacked by Hamas from the Rafah area in the south of the enclave. The military said Hamas fired the rocket from about 120 km (75 miles) away, making it the longest-range attack from Gaza causing casualties since a 2014 war. Asked specifically about whether his Golan Heights announcement was related to Netanyahu's upcoming election, Trump denied it. "Each move by this administration has put Arab states on the defensive".
President Trump's move has faced immediate, if low-key, opposition with U.S. allies Britain and France both saying that they still consider the Golan Heights to be "Israeli-occupied" in line with United Nations resolutions.
The backlash is likely to be limited to verbal censure, since the U.S. is a member of the UN Security Council and would quash any attempt to rein in it, experts have told RT. "That would be the end of the two-state solution".
