The unprecedented move is part of the Trump administration's broader effort to counter Iranian terrorism around the world, the announcement said.
"If reports prove to be true that the stupid USA administration intends to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, then the IRGC will also specify the U.S. army as a group (and target) like [ISIS] in all parts of the world, especially the Middle East", the commander was quoted as saying in the semi-official Fars News agency.
In a letter to President Rouhani, Zarif requests the USA army and CENTCOM be put on Iran's list of terrorist groups in response to today's US designation of the IRGC as an FTO. President Trump has publicly castigated Pakistan and cut off all aid to the country.
Trump said in a statement on Monday that the designation "recognises the reality that Iran is not only a state sponsor of terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft". "The Administration's action will increase the financial pressure and isolation of Iran and deprive the regime of resources it uses for its terrorist activities".
Senior U.S. military commanders share Trump's concerns about Iran and the IRGC but long opposed the designation due to concern over a potential backlash against U.S. forces in the Middle East and the problems It could create for U.S. partners who have a relationship with Iran, U.S. officials say.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton in recent weeks have called for the move. "Thank you, my dear friend, President of the United States Donald Trump, for your decision to declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terror organisation", Netanyahu wrote.
Mr Pompeo told reporters yesterday the U.S. would continue to sanction and pressure Iran to "behave like a normal nation" and urged America's allies to take similar action.
In a later tweet, he added: "We must help the people of Iran get back their freedom".More news: Nintendo Switch Online adds the freakishly hard NES Mario next week
"This designation is a direct response to an outlaw regime and should surprise no one", Pompeo said. "Iran's influence in the Middle East and its success in fighting against Islamic State are reasons behind this designation", Reuters quoted official state television as saying. Firms operated by the IRGC also build roads, man ports, run telecommunication networks and even offer laser eye surgery.
CENTCOM's area of command covers multiple war zones and hot spots including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and the Persian Gulf.
The Islamic Republic had warned it would retaliate in kind last week, after reports of the Trump administration plan first surfaced.
The United States put Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on its list of terrorist groups on Monday.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who recommended the CENTCOM designation, denounced the move against the Revolutionary Guards as a way to sway the Israeli election.
Earlier on Monday, Zarif warned the United States that Iran will take retaliatory action if the USA designates the IRGC a terrorist organization, Mehr reported.
The force answers only to Iran's supreme leader, operates independently of the regular military and has vast economic interests across the country.
The IRGC is in charge of Iran's ballistic missile and nuclear programs.
It turns out, though, that the Mammadovs, the Azerbaijani family with whom the Trump Organization worked with on the development was financially entangled with an Iranian family whose construction company is controlled by the IRGC.
