Suspensions, injuries, never-ending drama, inexcusable losses to bottom-feeding teams and even a buffet of on-the-court gaffes - enough to provide the internet with ammunition to come up with a "One Shining Moment" parody - smothered the Lakers' season and doomed Walton.
Luke Walton is set to be appointed as head coach of the Sacramento Kings, reports said Saturday, April 13 (Sunday, April 14, Manila time) barely 24 hours after he parted company with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The deal will make Walton the team's next head coach through the 2022-23 season.
"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service", said Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka.
The club said his departure after three years in charge was by mutual consent. "This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family".More news: Noam Chomsky takes apart the ‘scandalous’ arrest of Julian Assange
The Lakers reportedly had no idea what LaVar, Foster and Lonzo had planned until it was nearly too late. L.A. was just 17-31 the rest of the way as James missed 17 games and was in and out of the lineup until he was shut down for the season in late March. Walton was an assistant at Golden State for two seasons before taking the helm in Los Angeles. As the Kings are not the most stable franchise in the league, the hope is Walton gets enough time to develop their young core.
Through it all, the Lakers were 20-14 after beating the Warriors in Oakland on Christmas Day, the game in which James was initially injured.
Walton had been with the Lakers as head coach since 2016. "They did everything right, I'll say that". The Lakers' season fell apart during the longest injury absence of James' career, and they ended the season with almost every important player in their young core sidelined by injuries.
